A cooperative pirate sim in which up to four players sail around an archipelago in search of treasure, while other player-controlled ships do the same. Sea of Thieves excels more as a social platform than purely a game, kind of like Fortnite.

Microsoft's Australian branch partnered with music band Captain Hellfire & The Wretched Brethren for a two-day event in which the pirate band sang different sea shanties requested by players. The program was broadcast via Facebook, Mixer, and Twitch from 24 to 25 March 2018.
there is a little swearing, when you die you go to the ferry of the damned, you can see other players and interact with them there as well. you can drink beer and it makes you 'drunk' you loose a bit of control of your player and the screen spins and whirls. When loading in, players are deposited on one of many servers with at least a few other player ships. While the Sea of Thieves can feel vast, it gets small quick when someone is looking for a fight.
Forming an alliance does not prevent players from attacking each other. If the player dies, they are sent to a ghost ship known as the Ferry of the Damned where they wait until they can respawn. A competitive multiplayer mode named "Arena" was introduced in the Anniversary update; it allows four teams of players to compete against each other by gathering silver in smaller maps. there is "violence" of course, although the game is less violent than fortnite, players can shoot other players and skeletons everybody looks 'cartoon-ie' and there is no blood.

If you’re to steal hard-earned treasure from another group of players and then sink their ship, you’ve got to play differently after that. The other group’s game shifts, too; they may now be out for revenge. And the uncertainty of that will impact how you proceed for the rest of the session. But with friends or a good group from matchmaking—I've been matched with a couple fun crews, though plenty of assholes, too—the first five or so hours of Sea of Thieves gush with discovery and surprise and jovial stupidity. Oftentimes, metagames become popular and appear to overwhelm a game, like in Overwatch. One meta becomes popular due to hero balance changes and adjustments. A mass of players discovers that these group of heroes are the most popular combination available, and then people stick to it until more changes happen. It’s different in Sea of Thieves because of the game’s random elements and variation in play.
